As the Nepali calendar turns over and we step into a new year full of hope and intention, Bhaktapur International Hospital is proud to announce the launch of our Oncology Unit—a long-awaited and much-needed addition to our healthcare services.

This is not just another department opening. For us, it marks a shift in what it means to serve our community. It’s about addressing a reality that has been growing quietly but urgently across Nepal—the rise in cancer diagnoses and the widening gap in accessible, specialized treatment.
Why Oncology, Why Now?
Cancer care in Nepal has long been a centralized and difficult journey for many patients. Those diagnosed with cancer—especially in outer districts like Bhaktapur and the surrounding areas—have often been forced to travel long distances to receive care in Kathmandu or beyond. For families already facing the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis, this added logistical and financial burden can feel insurmountable.
At Bhaktapur International Hospital, we’ve seen this firsthand. Patients arrive too late. Families delay treatment because of costs, distance, or uncertainty. The disease progresses while people wait. We knew something had to change.
This Oncology Unit is our answer to that.

What This Means for Our Community
- Localized, Specialized Care
With our new Oncology Unit, cancer patients in Bhaktapur and nearby regions no longer need to navigate the complexities of the capital’s hospitals. We now offer consultation, diagnostics, chemotherapy, and follow-up care—all within our hospital grounds. Care is now closer to home. - Affordability and Access
One of the most overlooked challenges in cancer treatment is affordability. By operating locally and focusing on cost-efficient models, we aim to reduce the financial burden on families while still offering high-standard care. We are also working to build partnerships with government programs and NGOs to support patients from vulnerable backgrounds. - Continuity of Care
Cancer is not a one-time illness. It requires long-term monitoring, emotional support, and trust between the patient and their care team. By keeping treatment local, we can build those relationships and offer continuous support throughout the treatment journey. - A Step Toward Modern, Comprehensive Healthcare
Inaugurating this unit is a part of our larger vision: to transform Bhaktapur International Hospital into a center for excellence in community-focused care. Cancer care was a missing piece—until now.
Why This Matters for Nepal
The numbers are clear. According to the Nepal Health Research Council, cancer is among the top causes of death in Nepal. And yet, oncology services remain limited and highly centralized. Rural and semi-urban populations are often left out of the equation entirely. By launching this unit outside the core of Kathmandu, we are helping to decentralize cancer care—and that matters.
More than that, it’s a signal. A signal that quality healthcare should not be a privilege based on geography or income. It should be a right. And we are proud to take one more step toward that future.
Looking Ahead
This launch is only the beginning. We know the path forward involves training, community outreach, awareness, and continued investment in infrastructure and people. But this New Year, we chose to begin. And in healthcare, beginning is often the most important thing.
To everyone who supported this initiative—doctors, nurses, donors, administrators, and families—we thank you. Your work and belief made this possible.
We invite our community, both near and far, to learn more, to share the word, and to reach out if you or someone you love needs help.
Let this be a new year where we don’t just celebrate, but heal—together.
